Samenvatting: a maintenance model is presented in which both the interval of lifetime extension and the interval of preventive replacement can be optimised. The LEM-model can be used to minimise the life-cycle cost of investment and maintenance in both the design and use phase.

Samenvatting: the subject of this paper is determining optimal replacement decisions for components under stochastic detorioration. By using the average costs per unit time, the discounted costs over an unbounded horizon, and the equivalent average costs per unit time, the cost of preventive maintenance can be balanced against the cost of corrective maintenance.
