DWW in facts & figures

Mission

The Road and Hydraulic Engineering Institute is a part of Rijkswaterstaat, the Public Works Department of The Netherlands. The institute is the advisor for technique and environment in road and hydraulic engineering.Customer oriented, innovative, professional, aimed at cooperation and flexible are key notions for the organisation. At this, the working joy of the staff members is essential.

Personnel

The DWW has a full-time staff of approximately 260, around seventy per cent of whom hold academic or postgraduate qualifications.

Main Activities

The DWW translates technical and environmental expertise into understandable and practical recommendations in the broad field of road construction and hydraulic engineering. The institute has an annual turnover in the order of € 50 million, with which various research and consultancy projects are carried out on behalf of the other departments and directories within the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.

The DWW also promotes the exchange of specialist knowledge within the soil engineering, road construction and hydraulic engineering sector. A significant proportion of DWW projects (or those contracted out by the DWW) results in the publication of a report. (Recent years have seen an average of over one hundred such reports). The DWW promotes the design of new software for use in civil engineering.

Cooperative alliance and contacts

The DWW maintains close links with other organizations active in the field of civil engineering and technology, both in The Netherlands and abroad. Organizations with which the DWW regularly cooperates in The Netherlands include: GeoDelft, Delft Hydraulics, the Netherlands Centre for Research and Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW), Civil Engineering Centre for the Implementations of Research and Regulations (CUR), various Universities of Technology and private-sector engineering consultancies.

The DWW is also represented in the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the European Committee for Standardization, the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the World Road Association (PIARC).
